Equity in Transportation

Frequent and clean transit, speed bumps alongside park playgrounds, sidewalks you can actually walk on in the winter–we all know what a city that we can get around in better looks like. I will continue to push for a safer, more livable Minneapolis.

In my first term, my transportation accomplishments included:

  • Leading the push for city-led sidewalk plowing, including the creation of five pilot programs for sidewalk plowing that will be implemented in winter of 2023-2024.

  • Leading the creation of the city’s first-ever interactive online tracking tool for street and sidewalk snow removal, so residents can see what routes are safe and accessible.

  • Working towards adding failure to clear snow and ice from sidewalks into the criteria for rental licenses, so that corporate landlords pay a price for neglecting the safety of pedestrians.

  • Securing  a  multi-million dollar investment into increased street lighting, including the creation of an online map for residents to track when certain lights will be replaced.

  • Strongly championed the use of 24/7 bus lanes on Hennepin Ave, and defended Council’s authority to legislate lane usage.

  • Authoring a resolution that Council passed unanimously supporting returning Olson Memorial Highway to 6th Ave North.

  • Authoring an amendment to the city’s statewide legislative priorities supporting state legislation for a Vehicle Miles Traveled (VMT) reduction goal.

This term, I will:

  • Expand funding for the Neighborhood Traffic Safety program. Residents know their streets best and know what needs to be done to  improve pedestrian safety in their neighborhoods.

  • Partner with unions and community groups to secure the necessary investment in the workforce needed to increase the frequency of public transit and make transit zero fare for all riders.

  • Implement a municipal sidewalk plowing program. Prioritize the clearing of the 300 miles of sidewalks most heavily used by pedestrians and transit users through a combination of Public Works staff, contracts with local business and neighborhood associations and a youth job program.
